Maine Kicks Off Fall Foliage Season

Maine tourism officials released the state's first fall foliage report of the season this week. The report marks the unofficial start of the state's popular leaf-peeping season. It tracks how tree colors are changing across different regions of Maine.

Cooler nighttime temperatures and shorter daylight hours trigger the annual color change in deciduous trees. Early reports show some color emerging in northern and western Maine, where cooler weather typically arrives first. Southern Maine, including the coastal areas, usually sees peak color a bit later in the season.

Fall foliage tourism plays a significant role in Maine's economy each year. Visitors travel from across the country to see maple, oak, and birch trees turn red, orange, and gold. Local hotels, shops, and restaurants often see a busy season tied to the fall color display.

State officials plan to update the foliage report regularly as the season progresses. Experts currently expect the most vibrant colors to appear across the state in early-to-mid October. Weather conditions, including rainfall and temperature, can affect how bright the colors become.

Travelers planning trips to see the colors are encouraged to check updated reports before heading north. Popular viewing spots include mountain routes, lake regions, and coastal drives throughout the state. Officials say the upcoming weeks will offer the best window for viewing peak color statewide.
