Lawmakers Work on the Country's Budget

Congress went back to work this week. Lawmakers talked about the 2026 budget. This budget decides how the government spends money. It pays for schools, roads, and the military. Committees are checking each part of the plan.

New rules also came out this week from federal agencies. These rules can affect businesses and workers. Lawmakers want to finish the budget by a deadline. If they miss it, some funding could stop for a while. Both parties say they want to avoid delays.

Congress returned to Washington this week to continue negotiations over the federal budget for fiscal year 2026. According to House and Senate calendars, lawmakers held floor sessions focused on several spending bills. Committees also met to review funding for schools, roads, defense, and health care programs.

The federal budget process usually begins each year with a proposal from the president. Congress then debates and adjusts spending levels across dozens of government agencies. This year's negotiations have included talks on both military and domestic funding priorities. Analysts say the final outcome could shape economic conditions well into next year.

Alongside the budget talks, the Federal Register published new rules from several federal agencies this week. Some of the rules covered consumer protection, while others addressed environmental policy. These changes could affect businesses, workers, and everyday consumers once they take effect. Committees in both chambers continue reviewing sections of the budget before scheduling final votes.

Lawmakers say they hope to finish their work before a key funding deadline later this year. Missing that deadline could lead to temporary funding gaps for some programs. Such gaps have happened before when Congress could not agree on spending. Leaders from both parties say they want to avoid unnecessary delays.

In the weeks ahead, negotiators must still resolve differences over specific budget numbers. Any final agreement will need approval from both the House and Senate before reaching the president's desk. Delays in that process could affect families and businesses that depend on federal programs running on schedule.
