NASA Shares New Space Photo Puzzle

NASA has shared its September puzzle for 2026. The puzzle shows a photo taken from space. NASA does not say right away what the photo shows. People can guess which satellite took the picture. NASA's Earth Observatory has shared these puzzles for many years.

The puzzles help people learn about satellites and our planet. NASA usually shares the answer a few days later. Teachers sometimes use the puzzles in science class. Anyone can try the puzzle online for free.

NASA's Earth Observatory has published its September 2026 'satellite puzzler.' The recurring feature challenges the public to identify a mystery image taken from space. Rather than labeling the photo immediately, NASA offers clues about the image. Readers are invited to guess which satellite instrument captured it and what region it shows. The series has run for years as part of NASA's effort to make satellite data more accessible.

Each puzzle typically features a striking pattern, such as a coastline or cloud formation. Some show geological features visible only from orbit. Contributors on the Earth Observatory's website often submit guesses before NASA reveals the answer. The answer usually comes a few days later. Educators have used the feature in classrooms to introduce remote sensing concepts. The puzzles also highlight the variety of satellites that monitor weather, land use, and disasters.

NASA scientists say the exercise is meant to spark curiosity rather than test expertise. Anyone can participate regardless of background or training. The Earth Observatory has published similar puzzlers on a regular schedule throughout the year. The series draws a mix of students, hobbyists, and professional scientists. Beyond entertainment, it underscores how many satellites orbit the planet gathering research data. NASA has not said how long the series will continue, but past installments suggest it will remain monthly.
