Congress Faces Budget Deadline Again

The federal government's budget year ends on September 30. Lawmakers must agree on new spending bills before that date. If they do not, parts of the government could shut down again. This year already saw two shutdowns.

One happened in late January, and a longer one lasted from mid-February to late April. That second shutdown lasted 76 days, affecting many federal workers and services. Now Congress faces pressure to avoid a third shutdown this fall. A government shutdown can delay paychecks and pause many public services.
