Nation Marks 25 Years Since 9/11

This year marks 25 years since the September 11, 2001 attacks. The attacks killed 2,977 people. Communities nationwide are holding ceremonies to honor victims. They also honor helpers who rushed to save lives.

At the 9/11 Memorial, officials will read the names of everyone lost. That list also includes victims from a 1993 bombing at the same site. The ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m.

New this year, organizers added a seventh moment of silence. It honors people who became sick after the attacks. Many workers developed illnesses linked to rescue and cleanup efforts.

Congress created Patriot Day in 2001, asking Americans to fly flags at half-staff. They also pause for a moment of silence each year.
