Rainy Start to September in Maine

September began on an unsettled note across southern Maine. Widespread rain moved into the region midweek, forecasters said. The rain followed a mostly dry stretch at the end of August. Some areas saw steady showers for more than a day.

Local meteorologists said the pattern was typical for early fall. Cooler temperatures often follow the first big rains of September. Residents can expect breaks of sunshine later in the week. Farmers and gardeners welcomed the rain after a dry summer stretch.

Southern Maine started September with an unsettled stretch of weather, forecasters reported this week. Widespread rain moved across the region midweek, following a mostly dry end to August. Some communities saw steady showers that lasted more than a full day. Local meteorologists described the pattern as fairly typical for early fall in New England.

Cooler air often follows the season's first significant rain events. This week's storms brought a noticeable drop in temperatures across the state. Farmers and gardeners, who had faced a dry summer stretch, welcomed the moisture. Local rivers and reservoirs, some running low after summer, also benefited from the rain. The wet pattern also helped ease minor drought concerns in parts of the state. Emergency officials reported no major flooding from this week's rain.

Forecasters expect breaks of sunshine to return later in the week. Weekend conditions look more settled, with a mix of clouds and sun. Residents planning outdoor activities should still watch for pop-up showers. Meteorologists say early September often brings changeable weather as summer transitions to fall. Similar rainy stretches are common in Maine as the region shifts into autumn. Residents are encouraged to check local forecasts before weekend plans. Many welcomed the cooler, damp air after a hot summer.
