An Otter Comes Back After 100 Years

BRONX, N.Y. — A hidden camera caught a river otter along the Bronx River in New York City. It is the first one recorded in the Bronx in about 100 years. RJ Hawkins, a scientist at the Bronx Zoo, has run cameras on that river since 2024. He said he could hardly believe the pictures. Otters vanished long ago because of pollution, lost habitat, and trapping. Volunteers and city workers have spent decades pulling out trash and cleaning the water. Beavers came back in 2007. Otters need clean water and plenty of fish, so this is a bigger step.

A motion-activated camera captured the animal, apparently a juvenile, on June 23. The images were reviewed and verified before the announcement. RJ Hawkins, the Bronx Zoo scientist who has run camera traps on the river since 2024, said he "could hardly believe" what he was seeing. River otters disappeared from the Bronx River in the early twentieth century because of pollution, habitat destruction, and unregulated trapping. For decades it was among the most degraded waterways in the region. The Bronx River Alliance, city and state agencies, and volunteers have spent years hauling out debris, rebuilding banks, and improving water quality. Beavers returned in 2007 after an absence of more than two centuries. Otters are a harder test than beavers. Beavers eat bark and vegetation, while otters need clean water and a fish population healthy enough to support a predator. Their presence is evidence about the whole food web, not merely the water chemistry. Researchers are careful about what a single photograph proves. The otter's sex is unknown. It may live on the river or it may have been passing through. No second animal has been documented, and one sighting is not a population.

The Bronx River runs from Westchester County down through the borough to the East River and was heavily industrialized for more than a century. The Bronx River Alliance, formed to coordinate cleanup work with city and state agencies and volunteers, has run a restoration effort measured in decades. That timeline is why the beaver in 2007 and the otter now read as milestones rather than surprises.

Why it matters: Ecological restoration is usually argued for on projected benefits nobody alive will live to verify. This is one of the rare cases where the projection came true on a human timescale, in a place most people had written off.

What to watch: Repeat sightings on the camera network, particularly a second animal or a female with pups, which would be the first real evidence of a breeding population.
